A Soul On Fire

Falling a thousand times over

She hadn’t yet healed
from the fall
when she found the next
stone

to trip and to bleed
to have her temple
profaned
with stupidity
and selfish
neglect.

A promise to herself:
never to return
to stand down
the fight
to nurture the forest
of time with
peace and solitude

(an elven moon
disregarded
unworshipped
fanning the
flames of
dishonour)

but that one
single
smile
that instant in time
was enough

to send her to
yet another fated
demise.

Distrustingly she
melts into his arms
slowly
fearfully
knowingly
embracing
the flames and
the salt and the sand

whilst still breaking
free from the ashes

(because the soul sets
on fire when the love
is gone)

Such are humans
and so very
human
is she:
they trip and they learn
and they oh so quickly
unlearn when
they yearn

a thousand times over
until the fire and the
spring in their
veins runs
out

(then and only then
will they find peace)

numb and tingly and
full of adventure and regret
she closes her eyes fiercely shut

ready to fly and to crash
against the waves

she jumps off
the cliff and
into
the void.
